How to reduce scanned file size on HP 4500 printer/scanner?

When I scan a simple A4 sheet in black and white with lowest dpi (75) and to PDF format the size is still approaching 1MB. Other formats also produce similar results (I have not tried all). I have tried all the settings I could find but cannot get it lower. What should I change to achieve file sizes of less than 100k per page?
